We begin with one of the most memorable presidential lines of the late twentieth century.
It was delivered in a speech by President Ronald Reagan, on June 12, 1987, at the Brandenburg Gate, in front of the Berlin Wall, and the words have relevance today, when directed toward a certain “academic” institution, located in Western Pennsylvania.
Reagan’s words, forcefully directed toward Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev were the following: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.”
Now, with the disturbing evidence outlined in former FBI Director Louis Freeh’s extensive report, it can be said, without equivocation, that Coach Joe Paterno was complicit in covering up the crimes of a former coach, and known pedophile, Jerry Sandusky, simply to protect the brand of the program. What a disgrace.
That same phrasing used by President Regan a quarter-century ago, should be directed at the PSU Administration, in regards to the Joe Paterno statue, which stands in a prominent place on the Happy Valley Campus; “Gentlemen, tear down this statue.”
